Aleksei 'Alek' Vasilyev

BIRTHDAY: 9th August

HEIGHT / WEIGHT: 180cm/76kg (and for you Americans: 5'11"/165lbs)

FACTION: Black

JOB: Magician, specialising in Escapology.

SPECIES: Human, with the eyes and magic of a mythical Lynx.

The mythological Lynx is a solitary creature, an elusive, ghost-like animal that sees without being seen. It is believed to be gifted with supernatural eyesight, capable of seeing even through solid objects.

Far back in Alek's ancestry, a small fraction of the Iberian Lynx gene had been added to the pool. Now, many generations later, Alek is the one lucky (or unlucky) descendant that has inherited the rare cat's superior eyesight and along with it, micro-telekinetic abilities.

With deep concentration, he can move any small object as long as it is visible to him (e.g. picking locks for his escape acts). He is currently still developing the ability to speed up or slow down naturally occurring vibrations of atoms in matter to alter temperature. If mastered, he could potentially manipulate objects to the point of ignition or freezing point.

Note, he does not know what species he is and why he can do what he does. There was never anyone to inform him on his Lynx cat ancestry so his long-standing discordance with animals such as birds and dogs remains a mystery to him.

PERSONALITY:

Easy-going | Observant | Flirtacious | Materialistic | Hopelessly Romantic

Although his deep gaze and lurking tendencies may say otherwise, Alek is a kind-hearted man, always ready with compliments and a dimpled smile. The polite and gentlemanly behaviour that his parents drilled into him at a young age has not been forgotten, but his years as a thief has had him develop an undesirable habit of basing first impressions on wealth, fashion sense and other such superficial things.

Alek's overly restricted childhood has rendered him slightly rebellious so he is ever determined to break free from anything or anyone that tries to cage him in (literally and figuratively). His premature decision to leave his family and riches behind occasionally causes brief moments of guilt and regret, but the painful feelings are always quickly remedied by the belief that the only way to go is forwards.

Alek was born into a wealthy human family. His parents were respectable figures and he had an older brother Sergej to look up to. He'd have led a perfectly peaceful life if it weren't for his pair of golden cat-like eyes. Alek's parents were unaware of the fact that after many generations, their son was the first to display any genetic traits of their lynx hybrid ancestor. In fact, they had no idea that such a thing existed. Instead of accepting their son's eyes as a gift, they saw it as a curse...a disease. Despite their fear of witchcraft though, the Vasilyev couple loved Alek very much and wanted only what they believed was best for him...and that was to confine him within the walls of their home at all times. They simply could not taint the family's good name.

The young boy tolerated the confinement in his earlier years but as he grew, so did his ability to think for himself. A visit into town to be around other people was all he asked for, but it was strictly forbidden. At the age of 12, Alek put his newly developed telekinetic abilities (something he had kept secret) to the test. He picked the lock that secured him in his home and granted himself with his first taste of freedom. Of course, the boy was careful to conceal his eyes as he walked the streets for the first time, and made sure to sneak out for only a short while. It was a refreshingly new experience to see normal people leading normal lives and because he didn't know how best to interact with others, he spent most of his time hiding and observing from afar. Alek's secret escapes went unnoticed for weeks but his parents found out eventually, and this lead to a heated argument. Alek was sick and tired of being cooped up at home and kept from the world. It was like being forced into non-existence. Although he didn't realise it, it was the lynx cat within him, screaming for freedom and independence. The next morning, he disappeared from his room for the last time.

At this point, young Alek could say with confidence that he hated his parents. Sitting up in his hiding perch, he watched the world continue on. They didn't care that he was missing, they didn't know he existed. He wasn't one to dwell on hateful feelings though, and he quickly found entertaining things in attempt to keep his parents off his mind. He enjoyed observing travellers of different cultures, and a group of Asian-looking nomads was beyond intriguing...and there was a pretty girl there too. Alek watched curiously as the group formulated plans to rob a nearby antique store. Although he was taught that stealing was bad, he was in no position to come out of hiding and oppose the idea. He even helped the pretty girl escape and hide when the robbery didn't go according to plan. The girl's name was Fran [link] and she revealed that she was a Doppelgänger shapeshifter. The two children sat together and shared their stories as they awaited the return of Fran's family. Unfortunately, they never came back for her. Both frustrated with the unfair treatment from their families, Alek and Fran decided to run away together so that they could live the way they wanted to. It was a terribly rash decision, but at the raw ages of 12 and 14, they didn't know any better. Before their departure, they committed a successful robbery at Alek's house to gather the things they needed to begin their journey. The Vasilyev family owned far more than they needed, Alek knew that well.

It wasn't until he and Fran had travelled a few towns away from home did it really occur to them that living like this was very hard. It was difficult both emotionally and physically. Alek found himself missing his brother, and felt terribly guilty for not giving a single thought about how Sergej might feel about suddenly losing a sibling. The companions fell to lows like these on many occasions, but were always brought back to the surface by inner fighting spirit. Alek and Fran continued travelling westwards and utilised their limited pickpocketing skills to keep both mouths fed. Half a year went by and they had grown so confident in their skill that they decided to target a lonely caravan. Unfortunately, their plan was foiled and the owner of the caravan caught the thieving pair with ease. Their captor had a wizened face and a harsh expression that softened upon realising that the two children were supernatural beings...just like him. Pitying them, the old man took the children in and introduced himself as Grandpa Jojimi, a retired gypsy illusionist who made a living from pick-pocketing. During the time Alek and Fran spent with the man, they were taught better ways to steal as well as performance skills. After five years, the man died of old age, leaving Alek and Fran alone once again.

Alek and Fran were now full blown teenagers ready to take on the world. They continued their journey westward, plundering business after business and grew increasingly ambitious with every crime. Eventually, their confidence and drive became so great that they robbed a bank. Of course, security was high and they were unable to outsmart the system. Fran managed to escape the scene in time, but Alek was not so lucky and ended up behind bars. The prison escape was nowhere near as easy as sneaking out of his home, however, he managed in the end and fled with Fran as quickly as possible. Any separation with his friend, no matter how brief, was just plain unbearable. It was after this incident that Alek and Fran made the mutual agreement to never risk losing each other ever again. Tough times called for a career change, and attending one show at Cirque des Reves as spectators convinced Alek and Fran that stage performance was their calling.

Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I had never agreed to run away with her, but I don't regret what I did. I've learnt so much from being with her, more than my parents could ever give to me. I wouldn't trade her for all the shoes in the world."
