Personality: gentle | reserved | idealistic | creative | observant | socially awkward | and just a little bit odd

★ Mei is a bookish girl with a serene disposition and a particular interest in the arts. Her willingness to learn has led her to excel in all the subjects she finds interesting, though her skills are still lacking in most of the practical areas. She rarely has a very strong opinion of anything, unless it is to do with something she cares about on a personal level.

♫ Mei's quirky imagination keeps her company wherever she goes. Her favourite pastimes include reading, singing and giggling quietly to herself. While it does take a bit of extra effort to keep her grounded, when something interesting manages to catch her focus she can be surprisingly clear-headed. But even then, she'd likely think about it in a non-traditional way.

☀ Mei has a very idealistic view of the world around her. To her, nature is never ugly - simply different. And beauty resides within even the nastiest, most horrid person. Nothing is ever beyond redemption. This unfaltering optimism is one of her best traits, but arguably also one of her weaknesses. She has not yet learned that it is important to be critical where necessary.

✗ Although she values her alone time, Mei does make a real effort to pay attention in social situations. She has a genuine interest in understanding other people but often struggles to include herself, or gets too stressed from all the interaction. It's easier for her to simply observe from afar. Much to her dismay however, this behaviour is often mistaken for creepy staring.

♥ Mei prefers to keep a small circle of close friends, and they are usually people who take the initiative to approach her first. She tells Fluffy everything because he never judges her and she's convinced that toads are far more understanding than people make them out to be.

Background:
Mei's childhood was largely uneventful but a happy one nonetheless. The family of three lived in a humble little cottage tucked away in the outskirts of Ottery St. Catchpole, a small village in Devon, England. As an only child, Mei was provided with everything she needed despite her family's unstable financial state. Her mother, an exceptionally bright woman, exercised strict parenting and placed a great emphasis on the importance of one's sharp mind. Her father, a contrastingly free-spirited man, filled their lives with art and music and taught Mei to be appreciative of all things in life.

Living in an isolated part of town didn't give her much of a chance to make many friends, save for the few village kids who were a 20 minute hike away. However, she was raised to find happiness in the smallest of things even when she was alone. If Mei wasn't at home reading the latest thriller novel or squeaking away on her violin, she'd be outside picking the new blueberry harvest or dipping her toes into the frog pond, humming to the sounds of nature. It was a simple life and her parents were both supportive and loving in their own ways. When Mei's Hogwarts letter arrived on the morning of her 11th birthday, the family celebrated with jam and biscuits and a new pet toad.

- Currently -
Mei's first three years at Hogwarts have been pleasant. She continues to study hard and tries her best to smile at everybody. While she does not have many friends, the few she does have are irreplaceable. After all the urging from her parents, she is finally going to involve herself in more school activities and is joining the orchestra and frog choir for the first time this year.

+ Singing, sometimes she revises by turning her study notes into little tunes
+ DIY crafty stuff, cute miniatures, enjoys hand-sewing tiny clothes and making dolls etc.
+ Making homemade remedies for absolutely everything
+ Being outdoors, always puts on a lot of sunscreen just in case
+ Fruits, particularly berries, cherries and plums

+ Talking to Fluffy because he's awesome

Mei has an inclination towards defensive and healing spells. She also enjoys finding creative ways of using spells that are often over-looked.

A docile wand particularly skilled with protective spells. A cedar owner is characterised as being one with deep understanding, clarity of vision and an underlying potential to be a frightening adversary. Do not underestimate a cedar carrier.

Pet:
- Name: Fluffy
- Species: Common (European) Toad
- Gender: Male
- Description: 7 inches. Rough, dry skin. Sandy brown colouring. Carnivorous diet, likes earthworms especially. Contrary to popular belief, handling him does not give you warts.
- Personality: A well-behaved, lazy blob that usually just stays on his cushion or on Mei's head. He is quite fat from being spoilt by Mei and walks very slowly. Seems to know when people are talking to him and occasionally lets out a croak in acknowledgement.

Fluffy is Mei's best friend - she informs him on all her worries and achievements. After a lot of singing practice and urging from Mei's parents, the two are finally joining the frog choir this year.

Extra:
- Mei's hometown, Ottery St. Catchpole, has both a muggle and magical community, made possible by the Statute of Secrecy. Other notable wizarding families that reside there include the Weasleys and the Lovegoods.
- Mei has a habit of fiddling with her hair when lost in thought and does it so much that her hair snaps! That's why she always has one random lock of short hair on the side 8) silly girl.
- If she considers you a close friend she will occasionally give you little handmade gifts! Like crochet plushies and felted doll charms.
- The Episkey healing charm is almost second nature to her now - she is always hurting her fingers, be it from violin practice or sewing needles!
- Although Mei possessed some strong Hufflepuff traits, the hat was not hesitant in placing her into Ravenclaw. The love of learning and creativity her parents instilled in her was what shone the brightest.

Relationships:
I'll make a proper chart for this someday but these are the characters she's made connections with so far through pre-RP/headcanons!

Lesedi Ohakim - One of the first friends Mei made at school. They met on the Hogwarts Express along with Logan. With the help of their pets, the unlikely trio became fast friends. Although Mei and Lesedi were sorted into different houses, the two shared a lot of the same classes and grew incredibly close as time went by. Their friendship is very pure in the sense that they simply enjoy each other's company - there is no awkwardness or defensive wall and they accept each other for who they are.

Logan Masters - Mei met him in first year on the Hogwarts Express along with Lesedi. He is often a little too loud and excitable for her liking, but at the same time she admires him for his ability to express himself so freely. Through the years, they have learned a lot from one another - Logan is a main reason why Mei embraces her individuality, and Mei continually inspires Logan to try new things. (Mei, Logan and Lesedi have been talking about the possibility of spending their next school break together!)

Rhys Zimmern - Ultimate music buddy! Mei and Rhys have been classmates for a long time but have only recently become closer because Mei joined the orchestra. The two often spend their leisurely time playing cello and violin duets together, giving each other music tips or discussing interesting new facts. They have also bonded over their shared dislike for crowded social situations.

Emilio Mendoza - Mei is usually intimidated by anybody older or bigger than her, but finds Emilio somewhat comfortable to be around. She appreciates his willingness to hold an actual conversation with her despite her awkward tendencies, and his interest in learning music has sparked a little something inside her. She genuinely wants to teach Emilio how to sing so that he can feel the magic for himself. She also really likes his cat.
